What is Stargardt’s Macular Dystrophy? Stargardt’s macular dystrophy, often referred to simply as Stargardt disease, is the most common form of inherited juvenile macular degeneration. It is a genetic eye condition that affects the macula, the central part of the retina responsible for sharp, detailed vision needed for activities such as reading, recognising faces, and driving. The condition is usually diagnosed during childhood, adolescence, or early adulthood, although symptoms can sometimes appear later in life.
